Grocery Store Scavenger Hunt
Our first unit in Health was Nutrition, so my teacher, Coach Fehling, taught us how to read food labels, how to determine what was healthy and what was unhealthy, and how many carbohydrates the average teenager needed versus the average adult depending on their gender. To help us gain a better understanding of how much sugar and fat was in the food we ate, he took us to Food Lion and had us find four of our favorite foods, and then write down how much sugar, carbs, fat and vitamins was in each. Then he also had us look at four foods or drinks that were junk food, so we would realize how much sugar we are consuming every time we eat chips, cookies, candy and soda. This was really eye-opening because I never really knew how much sugar I was consuming, and by learning how to read food labels, it helped me be more aware of what I consumed.
Vocabulary
Every unit we would have a vocabulary sheet that we had to fill in so that we would be able to recognize what the technical terms for different diseases, exercises, etc. were on our tests, quizzes, or while having a discussion in class. My teacher wanted us to use our common sense and use the definitions to try and fill in as many of the words as we could before we used our phones or laptops to find the right word. Completing most of these vocabulary sheets on my own helped me not only recognize the technical terms, but it also gave me a study tool for tests. If I had to go back and change one thing about filling out every vocabulary sheet, I would tell myself not to use my phone even if I did not know what word matched the definition, because if I thought about it long enough, I could have figured it out on my own.
