My Interior Design Philosophy
Interior Design consists of a beautifully designed space, that is organized for function, yet meets a certain mood desired for the room. When designing a room, it is important to create a floorpan to ensure that all pieces of furniture fit without seeming too crowded. It is also important to plan out the color, patterns, and textures that will be in a room so the room can seen unified. The most important piece when designing a room is for the room to be functional. When designing a children's room, you would not want expensive glass pieces throughout the room, because they may get broken. Thinking through each of these aspects before buying furniture can ensure that everything fits into the space, and matches the mood that is desired.
Examples of Work
Interior Design I- Spring of 2017
Color Wheel
I chose to include my Color Wheel in my portfolio because this was one of the first pieces that I created in Interior Design. It is also important for people to know the color wheel in order to be able to choose color schemes for their homes. Knowing this information is helpful for any career because being able to use the correct colors when decorating is helpful, so you can create the mood that is desired in rooms. While I was working on this project, I knew the order of the color wheel.
Color Schemes
I created this color schemes drawing in the beginning of Interior Design I. Each piece of the puzzle has a different type of color scheme. Creating this helped me visualize how to use the color wheel for each type of color scheme.
Online Floor Plan
This floor plan was the first floor plan I created online, and it was very detailed because I added flooring and furniture. This is important in Interior Design because it is a good skill to have, so in the future you can plan out space, and see how colors fit into a room.
Elements of Design
When finding pictures for this project, I realized the importance of using the Elements of Design. Some pictures that I came across were not visually appealing, due to the fact that they did not use the Elements of Design. It was also beneficial to learn the six elements, so in the future when I am decorating my dorm room or apartment, I will make sure the space is used to the best of its ability.
Interior Design II
Elements of Design
To build on what was learned in Interior Design I, we had to find furniture for each room you could find in a house, and use a different type of color scheme in each room. This was a challenge because it was hard to find colors that matched the split-complementary color scheme in the living room. My favorite room is the kitchen because I love the analogous color scheme using red, red-orange, orange, yellow, and yellow-orange.
Business Card
In Interior Design II, we chose business partners, and as a part of our partnership, we had to design business cards. I partnered with Francis, and we chose to make bright business cards to draw attention to them. I think knowing how to make business cards is a useful skill because they can be used in any line of work, and it is important to know how to attract business.
Interior Design II Honors Projects
Italianate House
Unfortunately, I was unable to upload my Italianate Paper as a document because it was too large, but here is the link to the paper:

For the first honors project in Interior Design II, I chose to build an Italianate style home because while learning about it in class, I was fascinated by the details on the outside of the home. Building this house was quite a challenge, but I feel like the final product turned out great. Above is the progression of the house as I build it in class, as well as the paper I wrote and the PowerPoint I created.
Cultural Exploration Project
For our second honors project, I opted to complete the Cultural Research Project. I choose to research Sweden, and design/build a living room. In my research, I found that many homes had large windows and no window treatments to let in as much light as possible due to their geographical location. When designing the living room, I chose to use an accented neutral color scheme, to make the room seem more open. I chose to make 2 walls floor to ceiling windows to accentuate natural light. I had the most fun with this project because it was fun learning about another country's interior design, and how similar some aspects of design are to the United States.
Reflection
Throughout Interior Design I & II, I learned that many aspects of Interior Design were not actually designing a room, but more paying attention to detail, and collaboration. I was able to practice these skills during class, and I hope these skills will help me prepare for my future. Many of these skills also require patience, flexibility, and being able to stay calm when the clock is ticking. These skills will especially benefit me in my future years of schooling and in the workforce, because I plan on becoming a Physical Therapist. This job is all about collaboration with clients, and when working with others you have to be flexible and patient because some people may be stubborn and not willing to accept your ideas. When applying for jobs, employers look for applicants who are able to collaborate but also be creative on your own, which is where attention to detail can be very useful. Overall, I have learned many interior design skills, as well as life skills that will help me be successful not only in life, but in designing my future home.
